Q: Right. Burke: Well, I hope it gets maintained. From what youve described, the different places that have been demolished over the years were extremely different from each other. Oh, God, I worked so damn hard. And with the Air Force, I enjoyed every minute. That was something that you had restoredis that right? Yes, and I had bought the house, but I couldnt have the house and move in until she died. See Photos. So everything just kept going off and someone would have all of this, someone would have all of that. Unfortunately, you got to find environmentalists, theyve got to look for things and theyve got to point things out. If you stood outside and looked at it, the staircase went that way. The roof was shot because the old guy that was caretaker here, he used to walk around on the roof and watch all the boats in the harbor. There was the main house, over here was the bar, over here was this big dining room, and this was the main house. And the only reason why this survived is because nobody wanted the farmhouse! I come down the stairs and I opened the door. Daller: Plus the fact, it cost a fortune to take away the manure. And I just got a call from all my lady friends saying that my house is falling apart. Thanks very much to you. And what they did is they bought a whole fleet of old taxis. And I never got along with her that much because everything I wanted to do, she said, No, no, no, I dont like that. Would you sell me the acres in the front? Q: [laughs] How did you figure out what needed to be done with the house? And through all the years that the old lady had this woman taking care of her, the lilacs were always in bloomwhen they were in bloom, they were in the house. Well, I was born on Staten Island. And he was the one that took me around and showed me where to get the good fabric. But they hadnt been there, maybe five, six years, and I guess they decided, Oh! Burke: I knew that. My father was in the political-end, and he was in Borough Hall and everything like that. And I went around and we all hadyou were only allowed to buy two bottles of wine and a bottle of whiskey, or something. But Id go off with Murphy and wed go to these estate sales and most of the stuff thats in here was, I bought and shipped it all back. And because of that, and especially the interior design thing, I went around, did little jobs, and did things, and because I learned so much by going to that to school there, that when I got back here, I got nice little jobs here and there. Daller: Well, yes. Daller: He did the sofa upstairs as well. And he dealed in antique rugs, and regular rugs and everything. Then I decided, well, Im going to get myself a nice apartment. Then, on that side, was the dining room, and the kitchen. And now the people that I sold it to, the Pistillis [James and Kathleen Pistilli], they had the whole thing researched and now its got landmark things on it and everything. Burke: Yes, but just think of that gorgeous, bigthe mansion that this was their farmhouse, up the street here, that was gorgeous. Lets stay friends. Daller: Well, he said, he felt that house had spirits in it. One day, he was gone. We just mentioned him. But those things, I couldnt. I fixed it up. Obituary: George W. But they are the ones thatup in arms, saying, Aww, that poor horse. And if you were wearing them and you went and got in your car and turned the heater on, you smelled like piss. From last time I saw it, it looked like it needed a bulldozer! She said, No, no, no. She said, you can save it. Lots of photos, costs, everything. Burke: The only thing is, the house will be closed. Is there anything, you think? And thats what where all the water, for all the laundry, and all that kind of stuffnot the drinking water, the working waterwould come out of that big cistern, and would go intoand the pump and everything, its still down there, connected to that thing out there. I bought those buildings. Unbelievable. And Ill see to it that, financially, things work out for the two of us. And if you can capture and keep something that looks like this, then this is a big plus for the area. And he was stationed here, in St. George, and he would come home and wed live in the house. Kitchens were always built in a house outside by themself, and a breezeway going to the house, because the kitchens would always burn down. And all this beautiful stuff, I used to put in a big box. Yes, by the time I got to do all that I had no money left. But the one that I remember was a great big brooch. The son and his wife took over Scalamandr. Burke: Yes. Because the other way, my uncle was digging into whatever a little bit of savings he had, in order to pay. You couldnt even see it. Most of the furniture thats hereI never furnished the house until I owned it. I said to him, Are you kidding? Or did you have to just guess and make decisions? So they built it like an attic and it was called an attic but it was a whole complete story. And she was laying like this. And he said, George, you know, that big, beautiful house that sits empty? We were only allowed so much. Burke: So then I gave it to the Historic House Trust of New York. And the house across the street from it, the Old [Sir Walter] Tyrrell House. Thats how I got to know Adriana Scalamandr and the Scalamandrs. He was in the Air Force. Burke: And Im leaving everything thats in the houseits staying. Q: So he knew how much work it would take over the years and what a relationship would be like to. They gave me the fabric and they did it and such. By the time I got to the to where they were discharging them and such, he had just been discharged and left on an airplane. What the hell is this? All of a sudden, she went, Youre in my house, and get out! Holy Christ. But the problem is, its so limited on Staten Island. And he kept up with him, up until the time Mario passed away. And if they only would have remained, they would have been a part of it, and everything could have been fully appreciated. And there were two windows, like this. Ill give you a job. Christ, we had a good time. I dont know, Im just used to it. And right there in front of the windows was a coffin with all the flowers around it and everything. Daller: Well he formed that, thats the board. Burke: It was. But alls I know, they closed in New York and they moved out there. Well, on theon the fireplace there, those two big candelabras, theyre Meissen. And when I seen it all over there, and when I seen the British people were poor as church mice, they were selling everything. But Ive got to bring that portrait down and put it above that fireplace and get rid of that painting thats there. Thats what I wanted. Then there was the main hall that went through, just like this: door, front door, back door. George Burke is one of these dedicated keepers: He minds the Seguine Mansion, which he bought in 1981. If they brought flowers, it had to be lilacs. So I said, Oh. So that was thatI got that little story. So it took a fortune, but I had it, all that money, to restore the house. Q: So its budgets and the contractors, all that stuff. It was so overgrown in the front yard and everything. Loving son of Joan (Perry) Burke of Plymouth and the late George W. Burke. Q: Was that here in the house? Hes the man that built the house. My sisterher mother [indicates Daller], Francesmy sister living in the Bronx, she got me a little apartment and she got me a job working for Saks Fifth Avenue. So we lived there, and it was a big courtyard and there were four buildings and the center courtyard was all grass. That was a bigits still there. Burke: Well, I knew how to do it. And he asked me would I be interested in working for him out here on Staten Island. He moved into the house shortly after the sale, and worked from the basement to the roof, and outwards throughout the grounds and stables, to complete the restoration. And my fatherwe were quite wealthy, growing up. This was the farmhouse. Half the railings were gone off the porch, and the column was falling over, and, oh, Jesus. And I made a lot of money. There isnt a room he doesnt go into. And then the Historic House Trust will use it as well to understand whats important to you about maintaining the house. And they added this big dining room to the other side of the house. Burke, who knew of the home and property from the time when he was a child, was committed to the challenge. So Walter was re-stationed to Fort Lauderdale in Florida. And people were coming from all over the island. He said, when he was moving here, he told the people there, he goes, Im moving. So most of the stuff is Victorianturn of the century and Victorian. Hes been maintaining it for forty-plus years. And I want my painting. They dont know it. Burke: Oh, when I was a kid, we lived in Annandale. Otherwise, Id never be able to have half the stuff thats in here because it would have cost me a private fortune to have it shipped. She came and did a lot for the draperies and everything here. I probably gave it to Bess. Why cant they just appreciate something for what it is? Because, now, they cant tear it down. It was unbelievably gorgeous. And the last time I went there, there was all houses built in it. She was a very good friend of mine, a really pretty lady. That was a great house. Then I got shipped to Europe. And if you went around with Mario Buatta, that was like going with the President of the United States. Daller: Thats a story you should share, about the lilacs and the lady. Daller: No. And when they got level, he screamed, Okay, George, theyre level, theyre level! And then I put a big postI put a big cement thing on the floor. I was down on the beach one day, I forgot what were doing. So I go downstairs. Kathleen graduated from St. Peter's Girls High School in 1962. Burke: Oh, I loved her. The Seguine girls, as they were called,. And they were the big windows that lookedand that was a whole, bigjust like here, it was another story. It was a mess of a mess. He worked by himself. And especially when I came to Staten Island and I was working for Sherwin Williams, andwhat the hell, Florence? And so they lost it. You made enough money. I said, No, no, no. Burke: Yes. And I renovated the bar, I renovated the other side, my two sisters came to work for me, running the kitchen and the dining room. The developers came in with bulldozersbulldozed that mansion, bulldozed the stables. I mean, you talked about it, when you were a kid, that it was this big house that you would see when you were out on, Daller: Its a part of the history of Staten Island. And she wanted to start running things and taking things over. And from the garden, you could come back in under the porch and down into the kitchen in the basement. Big fluted columns with big Corinthian capitals on them. And with the money that I made from there, I put it right back in the building. And they copied that from France, because thats what it was, it was the French mansard. But thats part of whats been going on down here. [laughs] But, itll be here. So that had the outside kitchen. I was an interior designer. But before we know it, there wont be a thing left in the house. But down here, all the beautiful homes that were down here are gone. They moved in there, and they lived there. I bet. Q: So what was it like when you had the house finished and furnished? Utica. Everybody smelled like that. And it was twice the size of this house. She left things there. I said, Oh shit, look at this. And I pulled that out and unwrapped it, and what the hell was in it? Q: No, that covers it! And I had this goddamn old sergeant who was going back also, but he was getting out of the service, and he was being discharged. Daller: Mm-hmm. And hes the one that did my portrait upstairs. .
